New Kensington, an Allegheny River town built around the birth of the aluminum industry in the late 19th century, has been trying for several years to remake itself as a hub for small businesses and technological innovation.

It took another step toward that vision Wednesday with a groundbreaking for the Digital Foundry, a lab space in the heart of New Kensington’s downtown where large companies, entrepreneurs, makers and students can get hands-on training in advanced manufacturing processes like 3D printing and digitally driven product design.
